Icarus took on Watlington Town Vets Wanderers in our 5th consecutive week of fixtures - unheard of in living memory and generating squads week in, week out is an achievement of itself.
For this game though, it all came down to how both teams converted their chances and this week it wasn't in Icarus' favour. It may be an old football cliche, but a 4 nil defeat wasn't reflective of the game which was much more competitive in reality. Icarus had plenty of great chances and it was just one of those days in front of goal.
Having said that, the opposition were obviously a good team with many strengths - big and strong at the back, with the ability to run with the ball from midfield and pace up top. Icarus did't help themselves though and had a lethargic start, allowing too much time and space leading to an early penalty. A 2nd wasn't far off due to poor marking at a corner and this was followed with a 3rd before half time - more self half from Icarus in defence.
HT 3-0 and Icarus were a bit shell-shocked to be so far behind given their own chances and the nature of goals conceded. Icarus started the 2nd half well and were well on-top, creating yet more opportunities but deja vu struck and another poor decision gifted the oppo their 4th. More of the same followed in a competitive half and at FT, despite a big loss, Icarus came off the pitch thinking there wasn't a great deal in the game (except the score line - which is all that counts).
In sum, Icarus continue to find their feet in the new league as they come up against more teams for the first time. We know we must start brighter and make the correct choices on when to be pragmatic and defend (hoof it!) or play the ball out from the back. But we must take the positives - getting a team out 5 weeks in a row is a big achievement and step forward and we are learning week on week.
Congrats to MOTM Mark Bowden in nets who made some fantastic saves and distributed the ball excellently.
