Match report

Icarus Masters were without their illustrious leader for this fixture, however full, clear and lengthy instructions were delivered by email which included a change in formation to 3-5-2. Dave Gault stepped up as Manager for the day and all that was left for him to say was, ‘enjoy yourself!’

Icarus weathered the initial high tempo storm from Wittering and soon began to dominate the game. Rutherford started to orchestrate events from the middle of the park, whilst Hyndman was a constant threat down the right wing. It was those two players who carved out Icarus’ first shot at the Wittering goal, with Hyndman hitting a rasping drive straight at the keeper. The ever busy Batey and Hetherington were a constant threat to Wittering producing numerous chances that unfortunately weren’t converted.

Against the run of play, Wittering hit a long ball over the top of the Icarus defence and their speedy forward converted. Wittering 1-0 up. Icarus remained in control for the remainder of the 1st half but couldn’t reduce the deficit. Half-Time Wittering 1- 0 Icarus.

During the Half-Time discussion, Dave Gault concluded that Icarus were by far the better team and should have been leading this game comfortably. Instructions to keep control of the game were given and Schofield was given the nod to go up front and bolster the Icarus attack.
Icarus remained on top in the 2nd half as Wittering seemed to invite the pressure, this allowed the impressive and reliable Sprule time to stride out of defence with the ball and pick his passes. The Wittering penalty area was then peppered but a clear cut opportunity failed to materialise. Hetherington earned a free-kick on the edge of the Wittering box and duly dispatched the free-kick which was flicked on by Schofield and subsequently headed home at the back post by Hyndman. Game on, Wittering 1-1 Icarus.

Wittering rarely posed a threat to Icarus who must have enjoyed 70% possession, but the ball over the top was a tactic they kept employing. Eventually, Wittering were rewarded with a corner. A looping corner caused Griffiths in goal some problems and he missed his catch under pressure from Wittering, the ball somehow manged to beat Laws on the back post and Wittering were 2-1 up against the run of play. A very soft and undeserved goal to give away.

Undeterred Icarus continued to control this game and pressed hard for an equaliser. A ricochet fell to Laws in the penalty area giving him the best chance of the half but a poor connection saw this chance disappear. Icarus were relentless in pursuit of an equaliser and plenty of other half chances ensued but the Wittering keeper remained unbeaten for the rest of the game. Final Score Wittering 2-1 Icarus.

Despite the score-line Icarus Masters played some excellent football in an unfamiliar 3-5-2 formation. Spurle directed the whole game from defence and was justifiably awarded Man of the Match. There were many positives to take into the next game where Icarus will become the victors once more.
