RAF Icarus Masters FC v AGC Veterans FC – 9 May 19

RAF Icarus FC hosted the AGC Vets for an annual fixture at a very wet RAF Halton. Unfortunately, AGC could only muster 10 players with Chris Jones completing a deadline day transfer move from Icarus to bolster the AGC Squad.

Icarus started the game well with a 4-4-2 formation and under the usual instructions from the Gaffer to dominate possession. However, it was AGC who threatened to score first. A through ball to an AGC striker saw our debutant keeper, Williams called into action. He did not disappoint, reminiscent of the ‘Monk’ from the movie Mean Machine, Williams got some air time and exploded into the challenge ensuring the score remained 0-0. He did pick up the only booking of the game for his endeavour and enthusiasm!

Icarus began to improve and slowly began to pepper the AGC goal, with close efforts from Schofield and Hollick. Icarus should have taken the lead through Gilligan, but a nasty bobble saw him shoot over the bar from a full 2 yards, a miss Ronnie Rosenthal would be proud of. Icarus were now in full control of the game, Laws dropped deep from Midfield to pick the ball up in the right-back position and dribbled forward unopposed like a young Barry Ferguson. Some neat play, between Laws, Capelin-Jones and Bradley followed which resulted in a teasing cross which Hollick dispatched at the back post. Icarus 1-0. Hetherington was introduced for Gilligan and Icarus continued to dominate and should have added to the score line, however it was AGC who went closest. Against the run of play, Jones had a long range shot for AGC which cannoned of the post. However, the score remained 1-0 with Icarus taking a deserved lead at half time.

The Gaffer made some changes at half-time, bringing Gilligan back on up front, moving Schofield back into Centre Midfield and Laws out to the Left Wing. Icarus restarted in the same 4-4-2 formation with no change to the philosophy of play. Soon after the restart, Icarus got their second breakthrough. A ball into the box found its way to Gilligan, who this time made no mistake and slotted into the bottom corner with a very cool finish, this time more akin to Gianfranco Zola. Icarus 2-0 up. Icarus continued to press and probe AGC and were again rewarded, a testing cross was bulleted into the back of the net by the AGC centre half, very Phil Jones-esque. Icarus 3-0 up and cruising.

Icarus dominance did not last and in the last 20 mins, Icarus looked like they were trying to emulate Ajax in the Champions League from the previous evening! An AGC Corner ended up in a goal mouth scramble which AGC managed to convert, the comeback was on. Icarus still 3-1 up. AGC were now in the ascendency and now began to assault the Icarus goal, without the assured performance from the debutant Williams in goal, AGC may have scored a few more. Chris Jones was impressive for AGC all game and began to cause Icarus lots of problems. A neat turn in midfield saw him ghost past Schofield and Jones was again unlucky not to score a long-range effort. Icarus could not seem to regain the dominance of the first 70 minutes. Babbington and Evans were solid in defence all game but could not prevent the runners from the AGC midfield creating one last chance, the AGC striker found himself through on goal again and this time lobbed Nicholls with a fine finish. Icarus 3-2 up and into the last 5 minutes. A poor 20-minute period for Icarus allowed AGC back into what was a one-sided match, but they held on to the final whistle. Final Score 3-2.

Man of the match for Icarus was Paul Williams, an assured debut in goal that kept Icarus in the game at the end. A special mention to Chris Jones who was easily Man of the Match for AGC after his last-minute transfer.
