Match report

On a balmy evening ICARUS masters turned up for their first foray into the Bedfordshire Cup competition, with the first game being against the previous year’s emphatic winners.

The game started off at a sedate pace with both teams getting used to the pace of play and each other’s form.
The opposition played out from the back and it was apparent that they play a lot of football together, they showed real guile, shoving before the ball arrived, forcing our passing into dead ends/blind alleys (no outlet) and a sudden change of gear from just knocking the ball about to flying at us in spells.

The teams were more closely matched than the score suggests, although a mad few minutes in the first half, with a penalty given away despite Ian’s great protestation, only to be undone by the sheer honesty of Dave Gault and the fact he didn’t want to get booked in the first 20 minutes.

The game ebbed and flowed with most of the play being in the midfield and some outstanding play by the midfield trio come five to keep the ball and set up some meaningful if not fruitful attacks.

A break down the left side of the pitch saw the Barton centre half go after the ball and the decision to come rushing out of goal by Dave (mistakenly, as Teo claimed he had it covered??) only delayed what turned out to be an easy tap in for the home team, this was followed by another goal close to half time.

The 2nd half saw a much more determined ICARUS performance and a return to our style of play which did cause the opposition some moments of arguing amongst themselves.

We had a few shots on target with Shane leading the way in the crossbar challenge from 25 yards and Jim cheeky back heel in the first half, which was after a penalty decision turned down by the referee who was probably not in the best position to see it (I can say this as an FA qualified referee observer before you all ask).

As mentioned by my learned friend Rob S (who as usual came on in the 2nd half and gave a sterling performance) the whole team played a good game and with a few more of the younger vets (I still believe some of their players were not 35 or at least looked damn fine for their age!!) we will have a good cup run and hopefully our revenge on Barton in the final.
