Semi-final day in the Intermediate Cup saw RAF Icarus travel to Actonians Association FC. A slow start once again for Icarus, which can only be defined as scrappy. Ultimately, Icarus were punished when Actonian’s left winger has taken on 3 players and managed to squeeze the ball past Bradshaw. 1-0 down and a lot of work to do. However, this team doesn’t die, dusting themselves off, a few minutes later Icarus won a free kick on the edge of the box. Kirky, clearly noticing the keeper’s gloves laced in butter, will claim the assist, however, the credit must go to GDT, who pounced like a cat to capitalise from the error to tap in from a couple of yards, 1-1. Suddenly Actonians were rattled, misplacing their passes and not enjoying the Icarus high press. The half time whistle came at a frustrating time.
The second half saw less quality, with the game reduced to a real battle. However, that soon changed, when Newman’s 60 yard ping found Toogood, who had too much pace and power for the Actonian’s backline and had the composure to slot the ball into the bottom corner. 1-2 with 10 mins to go. Showing determination and grit, Icarus absorbed any pressure thrown their way and defended astutely.
Icarus march onto the Intermediate Cup Final on 25 Mar 23 against West Wickham Reserves at Old Bealonians.
Goals: GDT and Toogood.
MoM: Kirky
