This being the first fixture to be arranged between the teams there was no history to call upon and management were slightly concerned about the unknown quality of the Lincs Police Force.
With some consistency of players from the Cranwell match this was supposed to be a great opportunity for newer faces and new partnerships to bond under moderate pressure from an organised opponent. It never turned out that way.
Quickly realising that time on the ball would be plenty and that the opposition were going to deny space behind by sitting deep, very deep, early frustrations were evident. A unique experience and one that was to test the disciplince and decision making of everyone. It took a cheeky header from Ken Hemlin to break the deadlock on 30 mins after a Bateman cross from the deep right.
The shots started raining in and the woodwork was getting warm as ICARUS opted to strike from deep rather than improve the lateral movement across the back line. No doubt to be worked on at the Guernsey Trg Camp.
After Wrighty won and scored his penalty it was 2-0 at half time and ICARUS were looking composed and underperforming. Cue personality and formation changes with Hickinbotham and debutant Joel Sturgess coming on in the high wide right. Wrighty repeatedly tucked in off his touchline whislt searching for the ball and won yet another spot kick. Regrettably his kick was down the middle and low so easy for the keeper to save, but Wrighty scored the rebound.
Later in the onslaught Phelan rose for a bullet header which hit the bar and the new face of Rich Evans scored his 2nd in successive matches before leaving the pitch with a niggle, enter Heap at left wing and Rose at Centre Fwd.
In a rather critical summary ICARUS became predictable and had few options other than making use of the pacy and strong debutant Sturgess down the right hand side. The ability to confuse deep sitting defences and make space to invite short accurate passes could be an agenda item and key skill to have during the long season ahead.
