Match report

ICARUS FC XI V RAF COLLEGE CRANWELL (5-1)

The 2016 Burma Trophy fixture was preceded by a OACTU 7-a-side tournament that provided ample opportunity for Heap to identify potential ICARUS stars in the making.

On any other day the tournament could have been a useful warm up for the fixtures so it was reassuring to see minimal ICARUS players in the tournament with 15min games in the 29degree heat.  Should the tournament continue it may well provide yet another useful engagement and recruitment opportunity for ICARUS.

Touch, fitness and decision making. The three objectives for the day and for all to think about and evaluate in their post-match analysis.  After an encouraging warm up with excellent short touches and passes, ICARUS got off to an excellent start when Alex Wright pounced on the College defender to steal the ball and slot home after only 30seconds.

As the game progressed so the successful crosses from Dan Turner and Lee Hodgkinson reigned in. Unfortunately the ensuing headed goal opportunities for Alex Wright and Tom Somerville were not effectively designated and failed to hit the target. After the 15 opening minutes of impressive, short, controlled football ICARUS did appear to unnecessarily stretch the game with only Kyle Hickinbotham being successful with passes over 20yds or more.

ICARUS received the rude awakening on 35 mins when a surprisingly long goal kick was missed by our midfield and uncharacteristically bounced over the Defences heads, for the rapid College striker to slot past the onrushing Jamie Rose.

The ICARUS response was traditional: sharp, clinical and direct with Ash Steele drawing the foul for Hickinbotham to wrong foot the keeper and bend in a 25yd free kick. A clearly relieved ICARUS pounced on the opportunity for another with a noteworthy phase of play. Just inside his own half Arnison quickly shifted the ball to Fleming at left back who after 1 touch craftily slotted pass around the oncoming midfielder to setup Dixon who had come from inside to outside, drawing his defender he jinked for 15yds before chipping the ball between two defenders to Wrighty who controlled, stood strong and drew the foul in the box.  Tom Somerville duly slotted home the penalty with an air of refreshing confidence. ICARUS has restored the style of the opening 10mins and went in 3-1 at the half.

Tom Phelan came on for James Busby and debutant Richard Evans came on as direct replacement for Dixon.  Scorer turned provider Alex Wright continued his pivotal role by slotting a great through ball for Evans whose electric pace ensured he got the by line, beat his first defender and released his shot which the College keeper could not hold, a great introduction to the pacey Evans.

As the College packed the middle of the park, and the game became increasingly stretched, more changes were made with Pete Yarwood making his formal return to the fold, Craig Beach making his debut at right back and Scott Hyndman grabbing a cheeky cap at left back.  Before the final whistle went, Hyndman demonstrated his coaching credentials with a demonstration finish of unstoppable quality and which actually got stuck in the top corner of the right hand side of the goal.

This was a great way to finish the game which continues to have significant value in enticing young, impressionable players into the ICARUS fraternity. It was great to see two debutants on the post-match trail through Lincoln.
