Match report

As the football season drew to a close, Icarus was once again invited to participate in the Stephen Benjamin Memorial Festival of Football.  Given the club’s long association with the tournament, dating back to its inaugural event some years ago, Icarus were delighted to be invited back to participate in this unique competition.
Icarus players once again travelled from far and wide for an early start at the Barnet Powerleague complex in North London. This did not hinder them progressing from the group stages playing some sublime football, Icarus was quickly touted as a ‘force’ to be reckoned with! What awaited them was a tough semi-final against a team which included players from Old Uffingtonians (Icarus’ opponents in their AFA Challenge Cup Final win). Once again the Officers were victorious to reach their 4th cup final of the season. A 3-1 victory in the final game secured another piece of silverware for the RAF Officer’s team, but this paled into insignificance upon reflection, as this day was about much more than football.
It is now eight years since Stephen tragically died, and although this day must evoke sadness in those closest to him, it also enables everyone involved to celebrate the positive relationships he shared within the football family. The entire day had a close community feel with healthy competitiveness and fair play being at the forefront of every players mind.  This resulted in a day in which the power of football was truly felt, bringing individuals from a variety of backgrounds together to support and celebrate the life and work of a much loved and respected individual. Over the last 12 months the tournament’s organiser, Ian Gannon, has worked incredibly hard to forge strong links with the Childline charity, with all entrance fees and player donations from this year’s tournament going to support this worthwhile cause.
The winner’s trophy was presented by Stephen’s daughter, Stevie to Flt Lt Scott Hyndman who stated ‘This is our 4th trophy of the season, but this one is a little a bit special. It is not every day you get invited to a tournament that is so emotional for so many of your opponents and their supporters.  The hospitality was first class and it was an absolutely pleasure to support such a worthwhile charity in the process, whilst paying tribute to Stephen.  I want to thank Ian, Jean and her family for inviting us along to be part of something so important to them’.  This day was the final fixture in a long but successful season for the club, but one that will live long in the memory of all involved, reminding everyone that there is so much more to Service sport than just winning trophies.
