Match report

The second friendly post the AFA Jnr Cup exit was arranged against RAF College Cranwell. A strong squad assembled, including two debutants, Busby and Caine to face the College.

A fast and frantic start to the match ensued as the younger College side harassed and pressed the more experienced Icarus XI. It didn’t take long for the experience and class of Icarus to show and Turrell whipped in an excellent cross only for Dixon to send his half volley over the crossbar. As the game progressed Icarus began to assert their authority winning several corners in quick succession. Excellent deliveries from 1st team skipper Williams were met each time by Cope who could not find the finish. Just before half time Icarus’ best chance was created as Turnbull beat 3 players with ease before playing sublime through ball into the path of Dixon. Baring down on goal, and favourite to score, the College goalkeeper closed down the angles and made a fine save to keep the scores level at half time.

Icarus began the second half in the same dominant fashion as they finished the first, often playing out from the back; carving chance after chance. Once again some fine goalkeeping from the College goalkeeper ensured the scores remained level despite Dixon, Wright and Turrell all having excellent opportunities to score. With 10 minutes remaining Icarus began to besiege the College penalty area with crosses, shots and penetrating runs testing the opposition resolve. With moments to spare, and what appeared to be Icarus’ final chance Cope blazed over from 3 yards. It appeared that their final chance had been and gone, until Wright beat his man and was brought down in the box in final minute – penalty! Dusting himself off, the skipper and top scorer, placed the ball on the spot and fired to the goalkeeper’s right hand side. To complete his heroic day, the goalkeeper pulled off a fine save to deny Icarus the win.

Despite the match ending in disappointment for Icarus, the performance (in particular the second half) was very encouraging with some fine displays, most notably debutant and MOTM Busby.
