Right Place, Wright Time
Icarus moved into the Quarter Final of the AFA Middlesex/Essex Cup after a 2-1 win at Halton against Enfield Old Grammarians. Despite the soft and bobbly pitch Icarus stated brightly and were dominant using a combination of short interplay as well as the ball over the top when the opposition pushed up.
Icarus were in control of the game and were making a number of chances before their opener. Sean Tyres picked up the ball and drove into the opposition half before releasing Alex Toogood into the channel who then delivered a pin point cross back to Sean for a bullet header from 8 yards. The chances kept coming for Icaurs who really deserved to be more than one up, the top 4 of Icaurs causing havoc, and Arnison even had a rasping shot from the edge of the box tipped over the bar from the keeper.
Unfortunately Icaurs couldn't make their dominance pay and a ball over the top saw the opposition level before half time; the last 10-15min of the half was an even, if not a bit scrappy, affair.
Icaurs once again came out strong for the 2nd half and pretty much camped in Enfields half for 45 minutes, again creating numerous opportunities. Icarus had to be careful though and the oppostion had 2 good chances on rare breaks to go 2-1 ahead. They sent a header from a corner narrowly wide before Mark Bowden in goal (who had been a spectator for most of the afternoon) made an excellent save at his near post.
Finally Icarus got the winner through Alex Wright who had come on as sub. Dave Turnbull, who had been told to switch to the left, put in a cross that the keeper could only fumble into the path of Wrighty who was in the right place to slot it home from close range. A shame for the opposition keeper who had been outstanding to keep the oppo in the game apart from that.
A good afternoon from Icarus with stong performances across the pitch and decisive decisions from manager Heap playing a key role. Icaurs now hope that some injuries clear up for the Challenge Cup next week.
