ICAURS FC PROGRESS TO 2nd Round
Icarus FC (1st) progressed to the 2nd Round of the inaugural AFA Challenge Cup by beating Old Tollingtonians (1st) 5-2 at RAF Halton.
Icarus started very poorly, struggling to come to terms with the numerous changes to admin arrangements forced upon them by the International Defence Rugby Tournament being held at Halton.
Whilst the excuses were there to be made, there was no doubt that Tollingtonians started quickly, putting Icaurs under pressure and forcing a world class save out of Bowden in nets early on. However, the opposition soon went 1-0 up with a cross from their right wing from which the opposite winger slid in to score from 6 yeads out.
More pressure from Tollingtonians followed, as did the excellent saves from Bowden but finally at the 30 minute mark Icaurs woke up and started to get a gip on the game. The better team for the last 15 minutes of the 1st half and creating a few good chances themsleves at HT it was 1-0 but in all honest the opposition should have been ahead by more.
Icaurs continued where they left off at the start of the 2nd half and dominated straight away. The equaliser came from a deep cross by Turner which was deftly touched past the on rushing keeper by Hodgkinson (some may say it went straight in!!) and into an empty net. The second followed from great disrtibution by Bowden in goal up to Williams who flicked on for Turrell to slot home - route 1 but effective.
At this point the chances were coming thick and fast for Icaurs who were particulalry dangerous down their right, bombarding the box with good crosses. Whilst a good few clear cut changes were spurned, Icarus got a 2 goal cushion after Hutchings rose well at the back stick and nodded the ball back across the goal for Turrell to tap in his 2nd.
Tollingtonians then pulled one back with a nice counter and cut back to the edge of the box for a midfielder to slot home a classy finish but Icaurs were soon 2 clear agaoin when Williams cut in from the left with a mazy run before firing home from an acute angle. Turrell grabbed his perfect hat trick towards the end with a cool finish after Hodgkinson played a nice reverse pass to him.
Overall a good result for Icarus; after a slow start they turned on the gas and powered though. A notable mention to Charlie Woollatt who put in a great debut performance and to Mike Turrell for his perfect hat trick but the MOTM goes to Mark Bowden whos string of great saves in the 1st half kept Icaurs in touch before they found their feet.
