Match report

ICARUS BURMA TROPHY WIN

On Sat 25 Jul Icarus FC took on the Cadets of RAF College Cranwell in the annual Burma Trophy fixture, part of the Cranwellians weekend. First competed for in 1970, Icarus won 3-0 and extended their winning run to 10 years.

The Icarus team on the day was very depleted due to a combination of factors.  The usual summer holidays and work commitments (Greg Shutie being called to fly at short notice) were compunded by an achilles to injury to Scotty Hyndman in the warm up and Kev Lee's wedding up in Scotland (congratulations Kev!) which saw a number of Icarus player in attendance. The up shot of this was that Icarus were forced to start with a 'borrowed' Cadet at right back and a few others on the bench.

The College started the game brightly and with tempo, having the better of the opening 15 minutes before Icaurs started to make their mark on the game with an unfamiliar line-up.  Lee Hodgkinson started at centre-half carring an injury and Rich Lowe started at left back as Arnie Arnison had moved to pair up in the centre with Hodgy.  In midfield the centre two were Sean Tyres and Adam Fleming in the infancy of their Icaurs days - Sean being unable to play for some time due to Phase 2 Regiment training and Adam back from a long term injury since his debut on the Overseas Visit last year.

Soon Icaurs were creating chances, having joy with direct play and the pace of the front 4 - Tom Somerville and Alex Wright up front with Mike Turrell and Dan Turner providing width out wide.  Icarus went in at HT 2-0 up with composed finishes from Dan Turner and Tom Somerville.

The second half followed a similar pattern with the College retaining the ball well but struggling to create many clear cut chances despite have pace in their team.  On the couple of occasions that they did get into the box, Jamie Rose (back from overseas Ops) who had a great game in goal thwared a number of chances with excellent 1-on-1 saves.  Unfortunately for Icarus they picked up another injury (DT with a recurring ankle sprain) before they sealed the match with the 3rd goal - an excellent finish from Mike Turrel who curled the ball into the far post after cutting in from the left wing and turning a defender with a lovely Cruyff turn.

All in all an excellent day for Icaurs considering a squad low on numbers.  It was nice to keep a clean sheet but 3-0 was probably a little harsh on the College Team who played some nice football.  All of the Icaurs players put in great perfomances but Arnie Arnison was awared MOTM at centre half.

Lots of positives to take forward and it was nice to strat the season with a win, a clean sheet and some silverware.
