Aldershot always provides the perfect playing surface for Icarus and the football style that the Club tries to play.
When the wind is as strong as it was today, in excess of 30 knot gusts, then the style of play is always going to be a compromise.
The Army Reservists arrived in strong shape with a healthy squad to choose from, Icarus arriving with a 14 expecting to do a job against an opponent that had beaten them narrowly last season.
The game was bitty, and apart from some expansive transitions of play from the Icarus midfield, the only points worthy of note from the first half of football were the somewhat cynical nature of the professional fouling taking place to halt any breakaway from the RAF side - the referee was playing the match in friendly spirit and as such was reluctant to discipline anyone..
The second half started much as the first had ended, lots of physical battles around the pitch and bags of effort and industry - the most notable effort came in the dying moments to win the game; DT was breaking down the right flank and had beaten his man, Hodgkinson was free in the middle but the cross was overhit and eluded the onrushing midfielder.
James Hadfield made his debut in goal for Icarus and performed very well, as did Si Wain, playing on the Left of midfield.
A game best forgotten, but one which Icarus did well to compete in and not concede - onwards to the Cup Semi Final!
