Match report

With the weather playing havoc all over the country, Old Hamptonians Football Club (OHFC) worked hard to find a playable pitch in the days leading up to the AFA Middlesex Intermediate Cup Quarter Final tie. The match went ahead at St Marys University to the delight of RAF Icarus who had a strong squad for the match; which saw the return of Flt Lt Shutie to the back 4. The oppositions stats of 13 goals in the last 4 rounds, meant the RAF Icarus defence would have to be at its best. RAF Icarus as holders went into the match full of confidence after successful wins in recent weeks against the RLC and The Defence Academy.

Early chances in the match fell to the OHFC with them hitting the post but RAF Icarus soon took hold of the match and hit the net first through a goal mouth scramble which was turned in by Flt Lt Hutchings. 1-0 RAF Icarus.

The dominance of Flt Lt Hutchings and Williams in the midfield resulted in the opposition changing tactic and going long to there Centre Forward, however Flt Lt Hyndman was up to the task. Icarus continued to press for a second but against the run of play OHFC scored to make it 1-1.

This had OHFC on the front foot and they continued to press; RAF Icarus were struggling to keep possession and OHFC got their reward by taking the lead just before half time. 2-1 OHFC half time.

A rousing management half time team talk saw a changed RAF Icarus emerge after the interval. Within 10 minutes they were level, a great piece of interchange between Flt Lt Williams and Flt Lt Toogood resulted in Fg Off Somerville one on one with the Goalkeeper, Somerville converted passed the advancing keeper. 2-2

In the last 5 minutes RAF Icarus should have won the tie, the first chance falling to Flt Lt Toogood 3 yards out which was saved by the goalkeeper. The second was converted by Flt Lt Toogood from a Flt Lt Scott flick on, only for the linesman to give offside. Full time 2-2.

In extra time RAF Icarus continued to dominate the match and Fg Off Somerville had 2 chances to win the tie but both were saved by the goalkeeper. Neither team could find the winner and penalties were how the tie would be decided.

After the first five it finished 3-3 and went to sudden death, finally after 27 penalties, RAF Icarus came out victorious 11-10 to progress to the Semi Final where they will take on NUFC Oilers.
