Icarus FC at Cardiff City

Icarus FC at Cardiff City

Adam Broome20 May - 09:07

Icarus FC AGM, EOS awards and annual 1sts v Masters game.

14th May saw the return of Icarus FC to the famous Cardiff City Stadium for our annual 1sts v Masters grudge match, AGM and EOS awards.

The players arrived for a pre match walk of the grounds and pitch to make sure it was up to the Icarus standards, safe to say, it was. Both teams retreated to their dressing rooms to prepare for the game, the Masters looking to avenge last years 3-0 loss. Both teams started strong with the 1sts having the majority of the ball and the Masters doing very little to threaten the 1sts goal. After 2 well worked goals, the 1sts went into the HT break 2-0 up and cruising.

After what was no doubt, some rousing HT team talks, the teams emerged and play resumed. Another strong start from the 1sts saw them grab another goal, 3-0 after 60 mins. Both sides made changes and freshened things up and as the 1sts seemed to take their foot off the gas, the Masters grew into the game and after a fortunate deflected cross found the Masters striker unmarked at the back post, they were on the scoreboard, 3-1. More great play from the Masters found them 3-2 behind with 20 minutes left, pushing and pushing for an equaliser. The more experienced heads had the young lads on the ropes, peppering the goal with shots and crosses but none seemed to find the target. That was till an error and the back gifted the Masters a very deserved 3rd, 3-3 into the final 10, despair from the 1sts, jubilation from the Masters, they had done it. With 2 minutes left the Masters had the chance to win it with a golden opportunity but it was well saved and the follow up blocked on the line. FT 3-3, all in all a fair result which felt like a loss to the 1sts but certainly a win to the Masters.

The AGM followed the game in which minutes will be distributed via MODNET emails to all club members who wish to read it. If you do wish to read the minutes, please speak to Flt Lt Broome or Sqn Ldr Rickards. However, the big highlights would be the 1sts finishing midtable with a 50% win record in what is very much a transition year and the Masters awaiting a final result to confirm whether they will win the league or not, best of luck!

As we approached the final part of the day, EOS awards and Tie presentation, club Chairman Gp Capt John Hetherington addressed the group of 40 travelling players to speak of their brilliant seasons for both teams and the ongoing club ethos and collective pull to better the club on and off the field. The Awards and Ties were presented by 1st team Manager Flt Lt Andy Boyd and Masters Manager/Club Chairman Gp Capt John Hetherington.

Congratulations to all awards winners this season, well played throughout the season. Looking forward to someone other than Flt Lt Alex Toogood winning Top Goalscorer next year.

I would also like to congratulate all individuals presented with their 1st Icarus Tie. The Tie in our club means a great deal and holds a lot of history, you gain your 1st Tie on completion of your first competitive appearance for Icarus FC. You are expected to keep this with you at all times for games, events, OVs, ect unless you want to be fined. Its about being apart of a group, a friendship, making bonds with other Officers that extend outside of work and football. If you are lucky enough to make 50/100 appearances for Icarus FC then you will be able to trade your 1st/50 tie in for a special 50/100 tie, which shows your commitment to the club and can be worn with pride at all club events. You would be joining a select few from the 75 year history of this amazing club who have reached this milestone and gone on to do some extraordinary things, both in and outside of work.

From us all on the committee we would like to thank every single one of you for your hard work and dedication this season. Lets look forward to the 25/26 season. Up the Ics!
