Icarus
FC beat the Army for the 6th year in a row in a scrappy game
at Tring on Monday 7 November 2011. Icarus brought a squad
of 20 to Tring Athletic for the fixture and were looking to
use the game, both to extend their excellent run against the
Army, and to prepare for the vital AFA Cup fixture on the
Saturday against Norsemen. Icarus lined up with Flt Lt Dom
Smith in goals for the first time since the Germany training
camp in September and Dan Turner made his return from Injury.
Flt Lt Lee Hodgkinson started after his brace in the Junior
Cup and Flt Lt Andrew Martins-Tonks captained the side on
his 50th Cap.
Icarus
struggled to get their passing game going, but were still
clearly the better side as they pressed looking to make the
breakthrough. In the end the deadlock was broken with a Martins-Tonks
effort was put into the back of the Army net for an own goal.
The 50 Cap hero also missed a penalty, but it was not to matter
as Flt Lt James Render capped a superb second half performance
with a well taken goal set up by Flt Lt Gino Portaluri.
The
man of the match was Flt Lt Daz Coleman, although he only
played 45 minutes like most of the players he was very lively,
disciplined passed the ball around, and had a good touch and
got a couple of glorious long range strikes off, one of which
rattled the crossbar from about 25 yards.
The
final score was 2-1 to Icarus against a much improved Army
side. The return game is at Aldershot on Monday 19 March.
