After
winning 10-0 against Wandsworth Borough in the first round,
Icarus met the finalists from two out of the last three years
at RAF Uxbridge on a warm Saturday afternoon in the London
Amateur Cup. The Civil Service began the game brightly forcing
Icarus back, playing some high paced direct football. After
15 minutes the game settled and Icarus began to make chances.
They
were particularly dangerous from Rich Lowe corners, with the
Civil Service having to clear off their line three times in
the first half alone.
As
the first half wore on Icarus held the momentum and were unlucky
not to be in the lead at half time. The second half began
much as the first had ended with Icarus pushing forward looking
for the breakthrough. The Civil Service were playing on the
break and it was one such attack after 58 minutes which saw
Matt Whieldon faced with 2 forwards in the box. As he went
for the ball he caught the Civil Service player and the referee
awarded a penalty which was duly dispatched. 15 minutes later
Icarus won a free kick on the touch line 18 yards out, which
Hetherington fired into the top corner. With Jim Schofield
and Joe Griffin both having magnificent games in midfield
it looked like Icarus should win the match.
Disaster
struck with just over 10 minutes to go when the Civil Service
scored a good goal from 15 yards over Steve Taylor's head.
It looked to everyone that the game had slipped away from
Icarus as they piled forward looking to equalise for a second
time. It was now that Dave Bond made the first of three vital
contributions after coming off the bench. He was fouled in
the box in the last 2 minutes of normal time and Schofield
fired home the penalty taking the game into extra time. Bond
gave Icarus the lead 5 minutes into extra time with a neat
finish from 8 yards.
As
the game moved into the second period of extra time it looked
like Icarus had wrapped the game up however, a defensive mix
up resulted in the Civil Service equalising with 5 minutes
to go. With 4 minutes to go Icarus won a free kick 40 yards
out. Griffin drove a high ball the far post which was met
by Ben Fisher who headed it back across goal for Bond who
tuned and hooked the ball into the roof of the net to win
the game.
