The game was played at the Gibraltar National Stadium on a 3G playing surface. The Gibraltar team, fresh from the Island Games and with a football pedigree just below full international status was one of the most technically gifted teams Icarus have ever played..

A strong start was made by Icarus who kept their shape well and prevented Gibraltar from getting into any goal scoring positions in the first 15 minutes. Unfortunately, following a back pass, Jackson miss-controlled the ball and miss-hit his clearance straight to the Gibraltar forward who passed the ball into the back of the empty net.

The Icarus team appeared to be badly effected by this incident and for a 10 minute period discipline was lost and following bad marking from a corner Gibraltar scored their second and then shortly afterward third goals. In fairness to Icarus they could have folded at this point as in the extreme heat everything seemed to be going against them, however, sheer hard work saw them maintain their composure and hold line effectively without conceding another goal until the 60th minute. In the meantime, Arnison had made a superb last ditch tackle to prevent a certain goal and Jim Davies had missed a good chance from 12 yards to make it 3-1.

The Gibraltar team were passing superbly and rarely ever gave the ball away cheaply. As the conditions continued to take their toll on Icarus the class of Gibraltar began to tell and as the game drew to an end they score a further four goals. Each goal was taken well leaving little that the Icarus defence could do despite the best efforts of Lowe, Whieldon and Shutie. It must be said that at times Icarus passed the ball well and at last they nearly received some reward for their efforts when a 10 pass move ended with Portaluri hitting the cross bar from 20 yards with 5 minutes to go.

At the end of the game an understandably Icarus team walked off the pitch with a sporting cheer from the home crowd ringing in their ears. It has been an excellent lesson for all the players and one that everyone involved in the day will benefit from. The Chairman of the Gibraltar FA was delighted with the occasion and after the game he came into to the Icarus dressing room and offered to make the game an annual fixture.
