Icarus took on London side Oakhill Tigers in the 2nd round
of the AFA Cup on Saturday 29 October 2011 at RAF Halton.
The Icarus senior squad was in good spirits after winning
9 games in a row so far this season; including a last minute
cup win for the Icarus 'A' Team the previous Saturday.
The
game got off to a flying start when Captain Flt Lt Jim Schofield
headed a Fg Off Kyle Hickenbotham free kick against the post
in the first minute. Unfortunately, Icarus could not find
their passing game after this and while they did dominate
possession, they did not control the pace of the game. It
was against the run of play when Oakhill's forward mishit
a shot from 18 yards that deceived goalkeeper Flt Lt Mark
Bowden and crept into the corner of the goal.
Icarus
rallied well and Flt Lt Andrew Martins-Tonks was brought down
when through on goal and a penalty was awarded. It was a surprise
when the referee failed to send of the Oakhill defender. Schofield
stepped up to strike the ball into the corner of the goal
to make it 1-1. 10 minutes later Icarus took the lead when
a long Bowden kick was flicked on by Sqn Ldr Jase Parr to
Flt Lt Alex Toogood. Toogood made no mistake from inside the
box as he fired home to make it 2-1 with his 14th goal of
the season.
Icarus
still had not found their stride, but were now fully in control
of the game. Icarus continued to be a threat from set-plays
with the excellent delivery of Hickenbotham and the power
of Schofield and Parr in the air.
Manager,
Sqn Ldr John Hetherington urged the players to improve their
passing and tempo in the second half. While the performance
was still not to their full potential the 2nd half was much
better and Oakhill managed one effort on target in the 45
minutes. Icarus scored their 3rd goal when Matins-Tonks headed
home another Hickenbotham free-kick. Five minutes later Toogood
should have made it 4-1 when the keeper saved well from a
powerful shot from 8 yards. Flt Lt Lee Hodgkinson and Flt
Lt Matt Williams made their way into to the action to add
some urgency and Icarus were now in total control of the game.
Schofield was unlucky to see a 25 yard shot go narrowly wide
and Williams just missed making contact with a Toogood cross
from 6 yards.
With
10 minutes to go Turnbull was tripped in the box and the referee
awarded a penalty. Schofield's effort was saved by the outstanding
Oakhill keeper. The only scare for Icarus came in the last
2 minutes when the Oakhill forward headed wide from a corner.
So
Icarus progress onto the 3rd round of the AFA Cup and will
face one of the favourites, Norsemen FC away on Saturday 12
November 2011.
