Icarus
FC Vets hosted Bromley in what may well prove to be their
last game on the Stadium pitch at RAF Uxbridge. Conditions
were near perfect with nil wind and a surprisingly playable
surface, given the recent adverse weather. Bromley always
provide a stern test and arrived particularly keen to avenge
the 5-2 hiding they had received when Icarus visited the EDF
Stadium earlier in the season.
The
first half began with Bromley enjoying much of the possession
- though with little to show for it in terms of chances. The
catalyst for a dramatic shift in the balance of the game proved
to be a sloppy pass along the Bromley back line. Daz Godwin
was onto it in a flash. He intercepted, bore down on goal
and found the bottom corner with a clinical finish. Icarus
went on to play some sumptuous football in the remainder of
the first half, exploiting the space available and creating
a 'hat full' of chances. It was a little disappointing, therefore,
that, although John Pullen scored with an excellent header
midway through the half, Icarus went in at half-time just
2-0 up.
As
anticipated, Bromley came out fighting in the second half.
Icarus were never going to enjoy the dominance they saw before
half time after the break. Legs began to tire and one or two
had their lack of fitness exposed on the unforgiving Stadium
pitch. In order to introduce some fresh lungs into the fray,
the manager made a number of substitutions. The game settled
into a keenly fought battle with Bromley pressing hard to
get back into the game. Having weathered the storm for the
majority of the second half, Icarus conceded a disappointingly
'soft' goal after a goal-mouth scramble resulting from a corner.
This gave Bromley new hope and Al Smith was called into action
several times to make fine saves and preserve the Icarus advantage.
As the game wore on, Bromley, too, began to tire. Icarus became
more dangerous on the break with John Pullen having a headed
goal dubiously ruled offside and later hitting the post when
one-on-one with the keeper.
The
referee finally brought the contest to an end with Icarus
Vets running out deserved 2-1 winners. Another win for manager
Beer and a double over Bromley that certainly doesn't happen
every year. Man-of-the-Match was Si Hays for an outstanding,
workmanlike performance.
