Icarus
arrived at RAF Cranwell to play the RLC TA with a strong squad
with Rich Maughan making his debut at centre half along side
Jase Parr. Icarus got off to a flying start when Joe Griffin
put Lee Hodgkinson in behind the RLC TA back four and Hodgkinson
slotted the ball home from 12 yards. Ten minutes later Icarus
scored again though Jim Schofield, now getting back to his
best after injury, and it was three nil within 20 minutes
when Hodgkinson powered in a header from a Joe Griffin corner.
Icarus
were dominating possession and if anything they needed to
show more patience. On 35 minutes Schofield picked up the
ball with his back to goal on the edge of the box and turned,
beat 2 defenders and hit the back of the net from 8 yards.
The RLC TA kit back 5 minutes later with a spectacular 35
yard shot the left Dom Smith in goal with no chance. Normal
service was resumed as Tom Summerville ran through on goal
and fired past the keeper to make it 5-1. Summerville then
left the field of play with a foot injury and substitute Martin
Wyer scored with nearly his first touch from 6 yards as the
keeper spilt a Dan Turner shot.
The
second half began with Icarus looking to keep the ball and
play with patience. Chances still came and Hodgkinson, Hetherington
and Lowes were all unlucky not to score. The seventh goal
came from a good run down the left from Joe Griffin and a
superb cross which Schofield dispatched with aplomb!
With
10 minutes to go, the returning Carl Fivey was unlucky not
to score when a brilliant pass from Hodgkinson put Hetherington
in, who pulled the ball back only for Fivey to see his shot
deflected just wide of the goal.
The
game ended with Icarus maintaining good ball possession, but
knowing that tougher challenges are waiting around the corner.
