An
autumnal Saturday saw Icarus face another unknown opposition
due to the cancellation of the traditional fixture with Barclays
Bank. Mike Greenway did a superb job in arranging the BBC
as a last minute replacement for this fixture. The morning's
rain had left a glistening sheen over the pitch and the cloud
cover cleared to allow for some blue sky to poke through during
the match.
The
expectation was that the BBC would field a more senior Vets
side but to our surprise they arrived with at least 4 or 5
non-vets and this resulted in an evenly matched and keenly
fought contest. The dressing room was surprisingly buzzing
considering the muted performance and downbeat approach to
the previous week's game. The majority took part in the warm
up and key personalities like Greenway, Millington and Morris
were back in the fold to boost the banter levels.
Initially
both sides struggled to cope with the ball zipping off the
wet surface and players took time to adjust to the conditions.
Icarus lined up with a solid back 4 of Greenway, Barlow, Mark
Farrell and Butler and the early attacks from the BBC were
nullified with an organised approach. Al Smith making his
debut in goal made an immediate impact by providing confidence
to the defence with his surety in handling and kicking from
the deck. JP again showed his versatility by playing as the
big front man and began to cause the BBC a few problems in
the air. With 20 mins gone Icarus were awarded a free-kick
outside the box to the right. The big men loaded the box,
Butts delivered the ball to the back post and JP headed unopposed
taking all the pace off the ball allowing it to trickle over
the line from an acute angle. The goal gave Icarus confidence
and Fox continued his good form of the previous week and began
to pull the strings in midfield using the width and pace of
Roughsedge and Godwin.
The
BBC started the 2nd half with purpose and put Icarus under
pressure with Farrell being called upon to make some timely
interceptions with the young No 8 causing a few problems in
midfield. Daz Godwin was replaced by Ady Morris and Scott
Millington came on for Paul Barlow for the 2nd half. Renewed
Icarus pressure began to tell however, and the BBC conceded
a corner early in the second half from which Butts swept another
pin point cross to the back post and Millington this time
crashed a header into the back of the net. Within 10 minutes
though the BBC were back in the game when their No.8 took
a low shot to the keepers left which just squeezed inside
the post and the deficit was now reduced by half. In true
Icarus fashion the home side stepped up their game and put
together several attacks with shots from Fox, Beer and Pullen.
Another corner was conceded by the BBC on 75 mins, with a
predictable 3rd set piece to the back post Butts whipped another
ball onto the head of JP who rose and headed a pile driver
into the roof of the net.
Overall
an excellent team performance much improved on the attitude
and team spirit from the previous week with many contenders
for Man of the Match, particularly Mark Farrell for his excellent
performance at the back and JP for his superb 2 headed goals.
Jeff Butler though was given the award for providing all three
goals. Team morale is riding high so bring on Bromley!!!
