The
London Cup campaign began for Icarus back in September 2007
with a 10-0 thrashing of Wandsworth FC. The games became much
tougher after this and Icarus just edged out the Civil Service
4-3 in extra time in the next round after having being 2-1
down with just seconds left of normal time.
Icarus then cruised past Chistlehurst Sports FC 4-0 before
coming up against the high quality Nottsborough FC in the
last 16. After a tough game Icarus triumphed 1-0, Gino Portaluri
scoring the only goal. Finally in the ¼ final Icarus defeated
Old Thorntonians 2-0, both goals coming in the final 20 minutes
of another hard fought encounter.
All this meant that Icarus would face their first cup semi
final in many years at Uxbridge on Saturday 23 February 2008.
The atmosphere in the Icarus dressing room before the game
was good, having come this far, the players were determined
that they would see their way into the final. The opposition,
Polytechnic FC, were little known to Icarus, but arrived with
a young and fit looking squad, but were no doubt intimidated
by the stadium pitch at RAF Uxbridge.
Icarus started the game with a quick ball down the left wing
with Arnison overlapping Coleman to whip in a fast cross which
Hodgkinson narrowly missed connecting with. Polytechnic proceeded
to have the majority of the early possession. The central
midfield for Icarus were working hard to prevent any kind
of meaningful penetration from the opposition, with Ricketts
commanding his area well and collecting loose balls. Icarus
slowly gained a foothold in the game, with some nice passing
movement building from the back four and Griffin just in front
of them looking to release the Icarus wingers with probing
balls across the Polytechnic defence.
For the first 20 minutes, the game looked to hang in the balance,
with neither side able to capitalise on their possession.
But then on 24 minutes, Polytechnic got the response they
were looking forward. A long throw into the box caused confusion
between Ricketts and his defence to allow the Polytechnic
striker to sneak in, he struck the ball low to the right of
Rickets, who managed to push the ball on to the post unfortunately
for it to bounce of the post and strike him in the head and
into Icarus net. Polytechnic were unlucky not to double their
lead shortly after, but Ricketts did well to parry the shot
round the post for a corner. This seemed to awaken Icarus,
who began to utilise Martins-Tonks and Coleman on the flanks
and for the first time were able to sustain some pressure
on the opposition defence.
The equaliser came from an excellent movement down the left
wing, with Arnison getting forward on the overlap, holding
up the play and playing a neat ball into the feet of Coleman
on the edge of the box. Coleman then turned his marker and
knocked a clever ball to Schofield who squared the ball across
the box to the waiting Martins-Tonks, who drove the ball beyond
the keeper into the left side of the goal. An excellent goal
and just reward for the hard work thus far, making it 1-1,
just 4 minutes before half time.
The second half saw Polytechnic start strongly once again,
with Icarus struggling to adapt and get their foot on the
ball. The central midfield was working tirelessly closing
down Polytechnic's playmaker, forcing them to pass the ball
out wide. Neither side were able to create any real chances,
despite both defences becoming stretched at times. The break
through came for Polytechnic on the 75th minute when an intercepted
pass from defence was whipped to the right Midfielder on the
edge of the area who drove an unstoppable shot into the top
left hand corner of the Icarus goal.
From here Icarus began to chase, hassle and harry the Polytechnic
team all over the pitch. Griffin started to distribute the
ball out to Turner who made some impressive runs down the
right hand side causing Polytechnic all sorts of problems.
Again the final ball seemed to fall short for the Icarus team
in the final third.
After the goal Icarus had substituted the Martins-Tonks for
Bond who immediately pushed up front alongside Hodgkinson
as Icarus adopted the 4-4-2 formation. Icarus really threw
everything into the game and pushed bodies forward in the
final few minutes going close on several occasions, but never
managing to produce the elusive equaliser. A well fought match
by both sides but a disappointing result for Icarus after
such a great cup run.
