In
their first game of 2008, Icarus traveled to the windy hills
of Bath to play DMG in the now traditional January fixture.
This was an important fixture for a number of reasons; it
saw the return to action after injury of Joe Griffin, a first
start in a number of months for Steve Ricketts and a chance
to try out a 4-3-3 formation.
The team started well, with Rutherford, Griffin and Hodgkinson
controlling the middle of the park and Beer, Bond and Hetherington
making intelligent runs up front. Both Bond and Beer went
close in the first 15 minutes, both just failing to get on
the end of good balls from Griffin and Hodgkinson.
It was to everyone's surprise when the hard working Bath team
opened the scoring with a well taken goal after Kev Farrell
was accidentally tripped while moving to intercept a cross
field pass. Icarus soon replied with Hetherington having a
shot tipped over the bar by the Bath keeper and Griffin shooting
narrowly over from 35 yards.
Icarus thought that they should have had a penalty when Bond
was pushed down in the box by the Bath keeper, but the referee
gave the foul the other way. Hodgkinson leveled things 10
minutes later when he burst onto a superb Bond through ball
to dink the ball over the advancing keeper and into the goal.
5 minutes later Bond had the ball in the back of the net,
only to find that he had been flagged off side.
At half time Rich Lewis made his way into the action to get
some match practice after having missed most of the season
so far. With Arnison now raiding down the Bath left and Griffin
continuing to pull the strings from deep Icarus took control
of the game. A series of Griffin corners some failed to see
Icarus score from one the the many goal month scrambles and
it was from a superb Lewis cross that Pete Beer headed home
his 3rd goal of the season.
Not
long after this Joe Griffin scored a goal of the season contender
from 35 yards. Picking the ball up from the excellent Shane
Rutherford in space he advanced 10 yards before unleashing
a thunderbolt into the top left hand corner of the goal.
As the game progress Icarus hit the post twice and continued
to maintain good possession. Whieldon was having another solid
game at centre half and Turner was maintaining his good form
from 2007 into 2008. When the final whistle blew both sides
shook hands after a good spirited encounter and a fine game
of football.
Team:
Ricketts, Turner, Farrell (Lewis 45), Whieldon, Arnison, Rutherford,
