Icarus FC Vets played the Old Tiffinians, for the first time, under the late summer sun at RAF Uxbridge. Jez Swann failed a very late fitness test and consequently, the manager entered the game with just 12 fit players.
Icarus started the game quickly, as they had done previously against the Army, and it was clear that the Tiffinians were going to have their hands full with Wood's strong running up front. It was Wood's excellent work, down the right, that presented a chance for Bond who finished from inside the box with a left foot shot into the corner. The goal settled Icarus and the midfield in particular and thereafter Hays and Fox began moving the ball out to the channels with great frequency. Fox marked his comeback game with a left foot finish from distance which looped into the top corner leaving the keeper stranded. Smithy pulled off 2 outstanding saves to keep the Tiffinians scoreless; the second worth watching on Match of the Day later. However, as the half progressed it was clear the opposition were wilting in the heat and Icarus pressed home their advantage with a third before half time, Bond scoring after going around the keeper.
The Tiffinians pulled themselves back into the game with some gusto by scoring two excellent goals in the first 5 minutes of the second half. The introduction of the Icarus manager into the fray however, appeared to galvanise the players and after a brief spell of Tiffinians' pressure a returning Scott Millington steadied the Icarus ship with a sweet volley from a Butler cross. Normal business was resumed when Fox and Wood followed scoring in quick succession, a just reward for all of Wood's unselfish work. Bond completed the scoring with his third from close in and his fifth in two games; an impressive tally. However, it was Roughsedge's 'Peter Pan' like performance that caught the eye and he claimed the Man of the Match. On the day the Old Tiffinians were outplayed by an Icarus team that produced a first-class performance. Nevertheless, they were a welcome addition to the Icarus fixture programme and the return fixture on Sat 17 Apr 10 is eagerly awaited by both teams.
