Icarus Ease into 3rd Round
of AFA Cup
|

|
Icarus moved into the 3rd round of the AFA Cup on Saturday following
a 3-1 win against Oakhill Tigers. It was a scrappy performance
from Icarus, but they never looked in any danger of losing the
tie even after going a goal behind in the first 15 minutes.
Jim Schofield equalised from the spot after Andrew Martins-Tonks
was brought down and Alex Toogood put Icarus in the lead when
he latched onto a Jase Parr flick from a Mark Bowden kick. Martins-Tonks
sealed the game with a good header following a superb Kyle Hickenbotham
free-kick. Matt Williams made a good impact from the bench, fresh
from his brace the pervious week.

The Icarus Vets Team snatched a late draw with the Army on Sunday
at Halton as they came from 2-1 down to equalise in the last 10
minutes.
Icarus began the game brightly and took an early lead when Chris
Williams found space in the box to direct the ball past a stranded
Army keeper. A 30 yard thunderbolt from the Army leveled things
and they took the lead 5 minutes later from a corner.
Icarus improved in the 2nd half and Jase Parr gripped the midfield.
The leveler came from a John Hetherington corner as Daz Godwin
steered the ball in at the near post. Stand -in Manager Mike Greenway

Icarus Draw with Boston
Utd
|
|
|
An exciting fixture at Cranwell against Boston Utd's youngsters
ended 1-1 on Sunday.
Icarus began slowly, despite missing out on a clear penalty in
the first 5 minutes, and struggled to get on the ball in the first
25 minutes as Boston passed the ball well. They could not break
Icarus down however, and it took an error, as Icarus conceded
possession in their own box, for Boston to take the lead. Icarus
responded well and pushed hard for an equaliser. The goal came
as Alex Toogood was upended in the box and Jim Schofield slammed
home the penalty.
The second half was an end-to-end affair as both teams looked
to win the game. Daz Coleman, Joe Griffin and Alex Toogood all
went close to winning it before the superb Dan Turner cleared
off the line in the last minute.

Icarus at Doncaster Rovers
|
|
|
.
Icarus put in a superb performance as they lost at Doncaster Rovers
on Wednesday. After going a goal down in the first 5 minutes Icarus
played some of the best football of the season as the roared into
a 2-1 lead. Dave Turnbull scored the first with a finish to a
fantastic passing move. The second was a top finish from Alex
Toogood.
Icarus were unlucky not to go 3-1 up as Turnbull, Dan Turner and
Joe Griffin all went close. The talented Doncaster team had struggled
to create a chance up to this point, but with their quality, they
made no mistake as they scored 2 quick goals to take a 3-2 lead
on 60 minutes.
A tired Icarus defended superbly and only a top save from the
Doncaster keeper prevented an Icarus 3rd as Toogood raced through
onto goal. A disputed penalty with 5 minutes to go made the game

Icarus Lose in Close Game
at Ofxird

Icarus played Oxford University at Oxford City's ground on Wednesday
night. A strong Oxford side had beaten Oxford Utd Academy the
previous week and were preparing for the big game against Cambridge.
Icarus began the game well with Dan Turner and Dave Turnbull causing
Oxford problems on the right and it was a blow when Jase Parr
turned into his own net to give Oxford the lead.
The second half was another close affair with Oxford playing some
nice football. They grabbed an excellent second goal with 15 minutes
to go. In the last 2 minutes Tom Somerville pulled a goal back
following a good effort from Jase Parr which was well saved.
It was all too late and Icarus did not have time to score an equaliser.

Meanwhile, Steve Ricketts continues his run of bad luck as he
is now out for the rest of the season after injuring his hand
in his comeback came last week. He joins Phill Hirons on the long
term injury list.

Icarus Vets Win Against
RAF Vets
|

|
The Icarus Vets team beat the RAF Vets team 3-2 at RAF Cosford
on Wednesday. A very strong RAF side lined-up on a hot afternoon
with RAF legends such as Al Pluckrose, Lenny Brayshaw, Scott Taylor
and Craig Gill. It looked a daunting prospect for a depleted Icarus
Vets team.
It was a surprise when Icarus took the lead from a Hetherington
free-kick, but as Icarus came into the game Jon Pullen scored
a vital second before half-time. A dubious penalty allowed the
RAF back in the game just after half time, but good work from
Coleman saw Icarus score again to regain the 2 goal lead. Another
penalty made it an uncomfortable last 20 minutes, but Icarus held
on to win.

the socks are sky blue as well as the shirt.
Meanwhile, the Club received good news as it was confirmed that
Jim Schofield has recovered from an ankle injury he picked up

Icarus Perform With Distinction
v RN Under 23s
|
|
|
Icarus took on the Royal Navy Under 23s on Sunday at Portsmouth.
A young Icarus side started slowly as new players adapted to the
shape of the team.
Two goals were conceded in the first 20 minutes and it looked
like it was going to be a long day. However, as the game progressed
the players found their rhythm and Andrew Martins-Tonks pulled
a goal back with a sweat half volley just before half time.
Icarus had the better of the second half and Rich Lewis drew them
level with a well taken penalty. The RN broke from a corner to
take the lead again and a few minutes later won a controversial
penalty which was given by the linesman after the ref had signaled
for a bye-kick.
Now 4-2 down with 15 minutes to go Icarus threw everything forward
and Adam Kelly scored to set up a frantic last 10 minutes as David
Turnbull had a shot cleared off the line and McIntosh hit the
side netting. A superb performance resulted in an unlucky defeat,
but the future looks bright.

Matthews grabbed the equaliser with a fantastic volley from an
inch perfect Joe Griffin cross. Thom nearly won it with with a
close range shot, well saved by the keeper and Adam Kelly had

A fantastic weekend for Icarus ended with the Vets beating Bromley
5-2 away for the first time in recent memory. A Steve Wood hattrick

by Fox and Lownds.
Early in the day the First Team eased past Egbertians in the 2nd
Round of the Middlesex Cup. The goals came from Martins-Tonks

Icarus and RAF Senior Team
|
|
|
Icarus held the RAF team to a 0-0 draw in a training fixture last
night at RAF Uxbridge. A threadbare Icarus squad played with superb
patience and discipline to prevent the young RAF side from breaking
them down.
This weekend is another important one for the Club with the Vets
team traveling to Bromley and the First Team playing in the Middlesex
Cup at home.

Cup Defeat for Icarus
|
|
|
Icarus lost in the 3rd round of the AFA Cup on Saturday. The Manager
told us, "it was a disappointing performance and we can have
no complaints; on the day the best team won. However, I know we
are much better than that and I still expect us to do well in
the Middlesex Cup".
Greg Shutie impressed as a half time substitute and after a shocking
first half, which saw Icarus three goals behind, an improved second
half performance saw Joe Griffin and Gino Portaluri pull goals
back.

Injury Update
|
|
|
Icarus have mini goal keeping crisis as news broke today that

shoulder injury and Vinney Jackson's detachment it is a blow.
Icarus hope that Bowden will be fit in time for the fixture v
RLC TA on Sunday 25 Oct.
On a positive note, Jim Schofield has made good progress after
his knee operation and after coming through two 90 minutes recently
looks like he is back to his best.

Icarus Perform Well in
First Test of Season
|
|
|
Icarus took a one nil lead into half time against Sheff Utd following
a Kev Gilbert goal after good work from Andrew Martins-Tonks.
After a superb first half performance, Icarus began to tire in
the second half and Sheff Utd equalized through a penalty and
after making nine changes, scored twice in the last ten minutes
to win 3-1.
Coach Joe Griffin was delighted with the days efforts, he told
us, "we played superbly well in the first half and you wouldn't
have known it was the first game of the pre-season. At the end
of the day the fresh legs were crucial and the score does not
reflect the performance!"
New Goal Keeper Mark Bowden made a great debut between the stick
and Josh Fortune also made a return to the Icarus fold after 7
years in the wilderness.
Highlights will appear on IcarusTV soon.
