Icarus Vets in Dramatic Comeback

Swinney

Rob Swinney scored a last minute equalizer for Icarus Vets as they came back from 3-0 down on Wednesday to draw with RAF Coningsby Vets.

After finding themselves 3 down after 60 minutes a determined Vets team pulled a goal back through a Stu Lindsay penalty after Steve Woods had been brought down. John Hetherington scored a second, rounding the keeper to slot the ball home. In the dying seconds Swinney poked home following a Hetherington corner to snatch a good result from the jaws of defeat.

18 Aug 11
Icarus Win Friendly

Turnbull

Alex Toogood (2) and Dave Turnbull scored as Icarus began the new season with a 3-1 win against RAF Digby.

Icarus played some nice football on a bumpy Cranwell pitch, but struggled to convert their possession into goals. After going in at half time 1-1 it took 2 goals in the final 15 minutes to kill off a dogged Digby team. See IcarusTV for the goals.

Icarus continue their preparations for the new season against RAF High Wycombe on Thursday.

16 May 11
Icarus Play GB Deaf Team

Boston Utd

Lee Hodgkinson made his return to Icarus, after missing most of the season through deployments. He played his part in a good Icarus performance against the Great Britain Deaf Squad at Wolverhampton Wanders training Ground on Sunday.

Icarus had most of the possession in this prestigious fixture, but they came up against an outstanding goalkeeper who seemed to stop everything. Alex Toogood confirmed his position at the top of the goalscoring charts as he headed Icarus' goal in a 4-1 defeat.

The management were happy with the performance and the Club looks like going into the 2011/12 season with its strongest squad in decades.

9 May 11
Icarus Draw with Boston Utd

Boston Utd

An exciting fixture at Cranwell against Boston Utd's youngsters ended 1-1 on Sunday.

Icarus began slowly, despite missing out on a clear penalty in the first 5 minutes, and struggled to get on the ball in the first 25 minutes as Boston passed the ball well. They could not break Icarus down however, and it took an error, as Icarus conceded possession in their own box, for Boston to take the lead. Icarus responded well and pushed hard for an equaliser. The goal came as Alex Toogood was upended in the box and Jim Schofield slammed home the penalty.

The second half was an end-to-end affair as both teams looked to win the game. Daz Coleman, Joe Griffin and Alex Toogood all went close to winning it before the superb Dan Turner cleared off the line in the last minute.

5 May 11
Icarus at Doncaster Rovers

Goal Hero

.
Icarus put in a superb performance as they lost at Doncaster Rovers on Wednesday. After going a goal down in the first 5 minutes Icarus played some of the best football of the season as the roared into a 2-1 lead. Dave Turnbull scored the first with a finish to a fantastic passing move. The second was a top finish from Alex Toogood.

Icarus were unlucky not to go 3-1 up as Turnbull, Dan Turner and Joe Griffin all went close. The talented Doncaster team had struggled to create a chance up to this point, but with their quality, they made no mistake as they scored 2 quick goals to take a 3-2 lead on 60 minutes.

A tired Icarus defended superbly and only a top save from the Doncaster keeper prevented an Icarus 3rd as Toogood raced through onto goal. A disputed penalty with 5 minutes to go made the game save for Doncaster. Click HERE to see the goals. Go to the media page to see an interview with Gino Portaluri and Jim Schofield scoring against the RAF U23s.

30 Apr 11
Icarus Lose in Close Game at Ofxird

Goal Hero

Icarus played Oxford University at Oxford City's ground on Wednesday night. A strong Oxford side had beaten Oxford Utd Academy the previous week and were preparing for the big game against Cambridge.

Icarus began the game well with Dan Turner and Dave Turnbull causing Oxford problems on the right and it was a blow when Jase Parr turned into his own net to give Oxford the lead.

The second half was another close affair with Oxford playing some nice football. They grabbed an excellent second goal with 15 minutes to go. In the last 2 minutes Tom Somerville pulled a goal back following a good effort from Jase Parr which was well saved.

It was all too late and Icarus did not have time to score an equaliser. See Team picture HERE.

11 Apr 11
Vets Lose at Bromley

Bradley

The Vets lost 4-2 at Bromley on the weekend despite some good individual performances. Teo Bradley, making his return to the side, put in a good shift in midfield and overall, a depleted squad did well and were unlucky not to come away with a draw.

Meanwhile, Steve Ricketts continues his run of bad luck as he is now out for the rest of the season after injuring his hand in his comeback came last week. He joins Phill Hirons on the long term injury list.

Better news comes from Joe Griffin as he completes his rehabilitation from a serious injury that has blighted his season and he should return to the squad against either Oxford University or Doncaster Rovers.

1 Apr 11

25 Mar 11
Icarus Vets Win Against RAF Vets

Pullen

The Icarus Vets team beat the RAF Vets team 3-2 at RAF Cosford on Wednesday. A very strong RAF side lined-up on a hot afternoon with RAF legends such as Al Pluckrose, Lenny Brayshaw, Scott Taylor and Craig Gill. It looked a daunting prospect for a depleted Icarus Vets team.

It was a surprise when Icarus took the lead from a Hetherington free-kick, but as Icarus came into the game Jon Pullen scored a vital second before half-time. A dubious penalty allowed the RAF back in the game just after half time, but good work from Coleman saw Icarus score again to regain the 2 goal lead. Another penalty made it an uncomfortable last 20 minutes, but Icarus held on to win.

21 Mar 11
Icarus Beat RLC TA at Grantham

Somerville

Icarus won a hard fought encounter at Grantham against the RLC TA 4-0 on Sunday. The game featured 6 bookings and 1 sending off.

Icarus took the lead after 25 minutes when Gino Portaluri headed home a Tom Somerville cross. Despite dominating the rest of the half a second goal would not come. The second half was a scrappy affair and it was a relief when Tom Cope was the first to a rebound to fire home from close range to make it 2-0. With 20 minutes to go, Sommerville added 2 more in the last 10 minutes as Icarus cruised home.

14 Mar 11
Vets Snatch Draw at Sandhurst

Coleman

Daz Coleman returned to the Icarus setup with a last minute equalizer to earn the Vets a hard fought draw against the Army Crusaders Vets at Sandhurst on Sunday.

Icarus hit the post 3 times in the game and just as it looked like a goal would not come, Coleman arrived late in the box to head home. Tony Clayton was pleased with the character his men showed, "its always tough against the Army, but we kept at it and deserved the goal when it came".

8 Mar 11

It was from a Somerville cross that Portaluri broke the deadlock and Parr fired in from close range from a Jim Schofield pass to make it 2-0. Parr put it beyond doubt after good work from Andrew Martins-Tonks and Schofield.

Fisher's goal made the game safe as he volleyed home from another Portaluri corner and Jim Schofield scored a cheeky back flick to finish the scoring. Icarus Perform With Distinction v RN Under 23s

Matthews

Icarus took on the Royal Navy Under 23s on Sunday at Portsmouth. A young Icarus side started slowly as new players adapted to the shape of the team.

Two goals were conceded in the first 20 minutes and it looked like it was going to be a long day. However, as the game progressed the players found their rhythm and Andrew Martins-Tonks pulled a goal back with a sweat half volley just before half time.

Icarus had the better of the second half and Rich Lewis drew them level with a well taken penalty. The RN broke from a corner to take the lead again and a few minutes later won a controversial penalty which was given by the linesman after the ref had signaled for a bye-kick.

Now 4-2 down with 15 minutes to go Icarus threw everything forward and Adam Kelly scored to set up a frantic last 10 minutes as David Turnbull had a shot cleared off the line and McIntosh hit the side netting. A superb performance resulted in an unlucky defeat, but the future looks bright.
