In
March 2008, Icarus FC played in the Stephen
Benjamin tournament at Mitcham, Surrey. The tournament was
organised to celebrate the life of Stephen Benjamin who sadly
died earlier this season while playing for Old Westminster
Citizens football club.
The competition consisted of 8 teams playing in 2 groups with
the the top 2 teams from each group going into the Semi-Finals.
The tournament was eventually won by Champions 06/07, who
were the Old Westminster Citizens team Steve Benjamin played
in last season that won the league - all agreed that it was
fitting that Stephen's team came out on top on the day.
Icarus won the first game 3-0 thanks to goals from Pete Beer
(2) and Lee Hodgkinson. Game 2 was a scrappy affair which
was drawn 1-1, Daz Coleman with a superb equalising header.
The final group game was a straightforward 2-1 victory, Hodgkinson
with both the goals.
The Semi-Final was probably the best performance of the day,
a convincing 3-0 win, with Hodgkinson again scoring 2 and
Si Hays adding the 3rd. Unfortunately in the terrible wind
and sleet Icarus failed to score in the Final and lost 1-0
to the hosts Westminster Citizens.
It
was an excellent day and Icarus were proud to be associated
with a fantastic and well organised event. The Club is looking
forward to playing in next season's Tournament.
